Memorial Service - HE Dr Sam Nujoma - Founding Father of the Nation

On Wednesday, 19 February 2025, our students held a memorial service in honour of our nation's founding father, the beloved late president, His Excellency Dr Sam Nujoma. They paid tribute to the Namibian icon through poems and songs.

In attendance were the Executive Director of the Ministry of Education, Arts, and Culture, Sanet Steenkamp, Bishop Patric Djuumba, as the visitor and chairperson of the school council, Fr Rod April as the Dean of the St George’s Anglican Cathedral, members of the School Council, friends from the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture, and St George’s Family.

To honour the late Founding President, Mr Damian Grobler, the art teacher at The Prep School, created a drawing of HE Dr Sam Nujoma. He instructed all students from Grades 1-5 to colour or paint the drawing using the colours of the Namibian flag. Some of the Gr 5 pieces were on display at the assembly.

The St George’s Recorder Ensemble, which includes students from both the College and Middle School, provided music. They played the Prelude and accompanied the choirs in singing the Lord’s Prayer.

The Prep School's Junior Choir, consisting of approximately 100 students from Grades 1-3, performed the song "Little Star." Our Prep and Middle School’s Senior Choir, which consists of about 90 students from Grades 4-7, sang a Latin hymn.

Miguel-Jhurado Shiyuka, a Grade 12 student, wrote this eulogy:

Eulogy for Dr. Sam Nujoma

Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed guests, staff, and students,

Today, we gather here with heavy hearts yet deep gratitude as we honour the life and legacy of a great leader, a visionary, and the founding father of our beloved Namibia, Dr Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma. His passing is a profound loss to our nation, but his legacy will remain etched in the heart of every Namibian, every student, and every generation to come.

Dr. Sam Nujoma was more than a leader; he was the architect of our independence, a champion of justice, and a beacon of hope for all who sought freedom and dignity. Born in 1929 in Etunda, he rose from humble beginnings to become the driving force behind Namibia’s liberation struggle. With unwavering determination, he dedicated his life to the fight for equality, sovereignty, and self-determination. As the first President of Namibia, he laid the foundation for a united, democratic, and prosperous nation.

His sacrifices were immense. Exiled, persecuted, and facing insurmountable challenges, he never wavered in his commitment to the people of Namibia. As the leader of SWAPO and the first President of our independent nation, he worked tirelessly to ensure that every Namibian could live with dignity, pride, and freedom. His leadership was not just about governance but about empowerment—he believed in education as the cornerstone of progress and in the youth as the torchbearers of Namibia’s future.

Even beyond his presidency, Dr. Nujoma remained a guiding force, reminding us of our duty to preserve peace, unity, and development. His words and actions taught us resilience, selflessness, and patriotism. Today, as we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the incredible legacy he has left behind.

To the students here today, remember this: Dr. Nujoma’s dream lives on in you. Every time you strive for excellence, every time you uphold the values of unity and perseverance, you honour his memory. It is now our responsibility to carry forward the torch he lit, to build on the foundation he laid, and to continue striving for the Namibia he envisioned—one of prosperity, justice, and opportunity for all.

As we bid farewell to our founding father, let us not dwell in sorrow but in remembrance and gratitude. Let us honor him not just with our words, but with our actions, our dedication, and our love for our country.

May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may we always walk in the light of his legacy.

Now let he who has celebrated be celebrated, he who has uplifted be uplifted and let he who has watered be watered.

Thank you.
